Description
Everything is heritage, but not all heritage is equally interesting. On the scale of value, the ‘Coteaux, Maisons et Caves de Champagne’ reached the highest level in 2015 when UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List. A place of memory and Champagne culture, this unique property has now become part of humanity's shared heritage.
What do the Champagne Slopes, Houses and Cellars consist of? Three core areas (the historic hillsides from Cumières to Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay, and the Saint-Nicaise hill in Reims), a vast buffer zone of 320 towns and villages forming the setting for the property, and numerous remarkable attributes that illustrate its Outstanding Universal Value (OUV).
In order to pass it on to future generations, this heritage must now be preserved for the long term and placed beyond harm. The Champagne Slopes, Houses and Cellars Mission is the watchdog that keeps vigil, the arrow that points the way forward, the turbine that drives progress. It aims to mobilise all stakeholders, residents and tourists around this goal of preservation and good management.
