The terroirs of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco wines: a case study on the origin of quality in the hills of the Unesco heritage site
Terroir is not a static concept; it evolves as a function of climate, sustainable viticultural practices and landscape management. Understanding this dynamic is essential for modern viticulture. The Conegliano and Valdobbiadene hills, recognised by UNESCO, represent a unique balance between tradition and innovation. The quality of the wine depends on the interaction between the Glera grape variety, the soil, the climate and human skills, all of which determine the uniqueness of each expression of these interactions. But alongside the material values of a wine, there is also a wide range of intangible values, such as history, tradition and landscape, which make the wine even more unique.
Against a backdrop of global competition for wine, consumers are looking for authenticity and products linked to the terroir. It is therefore essential to preserve the winegrowing heritage without giving up on technological progress; only an integrated approach can guarantee the future of the sector.
